Our Response to Violence Against the Black Community
Dear 1stGenYale Community:
The death of George Floyd at the hands of police has sparked protests around the world. 1stGenYale denounces the continued violence against the Black community and works to empower individuals who have been affected by less overt forms of racism, including generational limitations on educational access and economic mobility. We advocate for racial justice and equity for all.
In line with our mission, we strive to help our alumni, students, and their families during this time of suffering from continued injustice, serious economic loss, and the COVID-19 pandemic. To that end, our volunteers have hosted ten webinars, many in partnership with the Yale Office of Career Strategy. We hope that these recorded career mentoring and advice sessions have had a positive impact by expanding access to employment opportunities for our community.
In the coming months, we will continue hosting programming to promote the well-being of our community and welcome your input around what this should include. Please feel free to contact us at any time with suggestions and/or if you would like to get involved more deeply.
We celebrate first-gen low-income Yale alumni and students from all cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds for who they are and what they have overcome. They help the nation address its most significant challenges and will bring about fundamental change.
